Step 1: Before you begin

The first thing you need to do is connect your store to Omnisend . Once connected, you’ll be able to add our signup forms to your site, trigger automation workflows, and automatically add your branding to all new emails that you send.

Once your store is connected to Omnisend, we’ll start to import the information about your customers, products, and orders. To facilitate this and to ensure no information is missed, we also recommend that you use the Klaviyo Data Import Tool, which allows you to transfer the following properties:

  • Email
  • Phone number
  • Name
  • City
  • Address
  • State/Region
  • Zip code
  • Country

In addition to this list, we’ll sync the subscription status for email and SMS channels, as well as consent timestamps if your contacts have them.

Step 2: Transferring your contacts from Klaviyo to Omnisend

Let’s take a quick look at how to transfer your contacts using the Klaviyo Data Import Tool, which you can get from our App Market .

Once you’ve got the tool, it’s time to generate a Private API key. Just log into your Klaviyo account and visit API Keys in the settings . Copy the generated key then paste it into the text field of the Data Import Tool. Click the “Connect” button, click the Settings tab and then the “Sync Contacts” button. You’re all set!

Step 3: Managing your segments

Segmenting your audience is one of the most effective ways to increase engagement with your emails and boost revenue. Omnisend allows you to create unlimited audience segments, with up to 500 data points.

Unsurprisingly, one of the biggest concerns people have about migrating email marketing platforms is the thought of having to recreate their segments. If that’s you, don’t worry—moving your segments from Klaviyo to Omnisend is very easy.

Just export them from your Klaviyo account and import them to the corresponding segments in Omnisend. You’re able to add tags to contacts when you upload them , which can then be used for segmentation.

Step 4: Migrating templates, forms, and automations

Omnisend has powerful builders for emails, forms, and automation workflows, including pre-built templates you can use immediately. We encourage you to explore these before transferring the templates you currently use in Klaviyo—you may prefer the options or want to take the opportunity to make any necessary changes.

If you would prefer to import directly from Klaviyo, you can create custom HTML signup forms or add a custom HTML content block to your Omnisend email and use the HTML from Klaviyo. You can also import HTML codes of your email templates (but we recommend that you’re either comfortable with HTML, or have assistance from someone who is). We also recommend familiarizing yourself with the attributes you should avoid in your HTML template .

To start, click on your icon in the top right of the screen, then “Store settings” and “Saved templates.”

Here, you’ll see a list of your saved templates as well as an “Import template” button. Click this and you’ll have two options: import an HTML file, or paste in code. We recommend the second option for Klaviyo users.

In your Klaviyo account, grab the HTML code, remove both the <DOCTYPE! HTML> and <head> tags, then click “Paste in code,” add your template name, and paste the code in the “Template HTML” box. Finish by clicking the “Import” button:

Your custom HTML templates will be accessible from the saved templates page, as well as appearing as saved templates in your campaigns and automation pages.

Step 5: Starting a warm-up plan

Once you’ve completed the migration to Omnisend, you’ll want to make sure your emails get seen by your audience. The best way to do this is by warming up your new server.

New servers aren’t allowed to send a large number of emails in one go, so you need to gradually increase the volume over time. Although it’s tempting to skip this part, doing so can result in a lot of your emails not being delivered.

The good news is that if you’ve got 20,000 or more subscribers, Omnisend can manage this for you. From your dashboard, click the Reports tab, then Deliverability and Open warmup plan.

By default, Omnisend will send to your newest subscribers first. You have the option to exclude certain segments if you want to, such as least engaged subscribers—you ideally want the warm-up emails to be sent to more engaged recipients, as their engagement will send the signal that your emails are trustworthy, which can increase your sender reputation .
